Why treat a cavity early?
Tooth decay does not heal on its own. Over time, a small cavity can grow deeper into the tooth, cause sensitivity or pain, and eventually reach the nerve. Treating a cavity while it is small usually means a simpler, more comfortable visit and keeps more of your natural tooth.
What are tooth-colored fillings?
Tooth-colored fillings are made from a composite resin, a durable blend of plastic and fine glass-like particles. We choose a shade that matches the tooth, then shape and polish the filling so it looks and feels natural.
For very large areas of damage, a dental crown may protect the tooth better, and Dr. Al Rezk will talk with you about which option makes sense.
Your visit
What to expect
Numbing
We numb the area so you stay comfortable.
Removing decay
Dr. Al Rezk gently removes the decayed part of the tooth and cleans the area.
Placing the filling
The composite is placed in thin layers, and each layer is hardened with a special light.
Shaping and polishing
We check your bite and polish the filling so it feels smooth.
Most fillings are finished in a single visit. Your tooth may feel a little sensitive to cold or pressure for a few days afterward, which is normal. If sensitivity lasts or your bite feels high, call us so we can check it.
Replacing old fillings
If you have older silver fillings that are cracked, worn or leaking, we can check them during your exam and let you know whether replacing them makes sense. Healthy fillings do not always need to be replaced, and we will give you an honest recommendation either way.
Comfortable care
If you feel anxious about dental work, ask us about sedation options. You can also visit our general dentistry page to see our other everyday services.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
How long do tooth-colored fillings last?
Many last for years. How long a filling lasts depends on its size and location, your bite, habits like grinding, and how well you care for your teeth at home.
Can I eat after getting a filling?
Composite fillings harden right away with a curing light. We recommend waiting until the numbness wears off before chewing so you do not accidentally bite your cheek or tongue.
How do I know if I have a cavity?
Early cavities often do not hurt at all, which is why regular exams and X-rays matter. Signs can include sensitivity to sweets or cold, pain when biting, or a visible dark spot or hole.
Should I replace my silver fillings?
Not always. If an older filling is cracked, broken or has decay around it, replacing it may be a good idea. We will check your fillings and talk through the pros and cons with you.
